Why is there a God?

Since a vast majority of Americans already know the answer to “is there a God?” I am asking different questions. Why is there a God? Why do you believe in God? Where did your belief come from? Why do you continue to hold on to this belief? The answers to some of these questions are actually quite easy. But before I answer them, let me tell you a story.

Several thousand years ago there were three prisoners chained to the floor of a cave facing the cave wall. Behind the prisoners was a large fire and a road. The fire cast shadows of the people and animals that passed along the road. All the prisoners ever saw were these shadows. All they ever herd was the sounds echoing in the cave from the travelers. All they smelled was the burning firewood. This was all they ever knew there whole lives. One day, one of the prisoners is allowed to stand up and turn around. He for the first time sees the fire that cast the shadows. He sees the people and animals on the road. He is allowed to leave the cave to see the real world.

Ok so that’s not the most interesting story ever, nor am I the best story teller but it’s the analysis of the story that has significance. This is not my story; it’s the Greek Philosopher Plato’s Allegory of the Cave [1]. What’s important to understand in this story is that all the prisoners ever saw was the shadows. There whole life was spent down there in the cave. They had no knowledge of the outside world. Their existence, their reality was the cave and the shadows. Because they had no knowledge of the outside world, to them it did not exist. Everything they knew to be true, everything they knew for a fact to be true was actually false. They were living a lie and it was not until one of them was release from his chains that he saw the truth.

What does all this have to do with the existence of God and why so many of us believe in it? We are all born in the cave. From the moment we are born we are preached to about the existence of God. When we are children our parents tell us that we must love God for he is responsible for everything we know. God is the creator of the universe. God is good and we must give him our thanks. As children we have a natural tendency to believe in anything any everything an adult tells us. The adults around us create the cave that we are raised in. God is the shadows on the wall. Since we have no knowledge of any existence without God, we have no reason to believe otherwise.

My challenge to all that believe in God is to ask themselves the questions I have listed here. These seem like difficult questions, but I think that for most of us the answers are simple. We believe in God because we are told to from the beginning. We continue to hold on to this belief because that is all we know. Like the prisoners in the cave, we have no existence outside of God. But unlike the prisoners we are able to stand up and turn around. Unfortunately very few of us ever do. Very few of us bother to find out if we believe, or if it is society that believes. How many of you have spent even ten minutes to decide if you really believe? How many of you have ever even considered the possibility that there is no God? I would think very few.

If the belief in God is just passed down from generation to generation, where did it come from in the first place? It came from us. The infinite curiosity of the human mind created God. We created God because we could not explain why the sun rises and sets. We created God because we did not understand how a sperm cell fertilizes and egg. We created God because we did not understand that living creatures evolve and change to form new creatures. But thanks again to the human mind, we created something else to explain these things; science. Science is the opposite of God. God is the short and easy answer to everything. Why is the sky blue? Because, God made it that way. Or maybe it’s because blue light has a shorter wave length than that of other colors and gets caught in the air molecules in the atmosphere [2]. Which explanation is simpler? The God explanation. But to believe that the sky is blue because God made it that way is to not even try to escape the cave. Holding on to the belief in God is reinforcing the chains holding you to the floor.

I do not want to live my life in the cave. I want to see the world for as it is. I do not believe in God. I am an atheist.

  • But Dave you forget to mention the ending to the alligory of the cave. That if the man left the cave he would notice all the things about the world and that he could not return considering he maybe murdered by the people still in the Cave. Could this explain years of religion persecution?

  • I am looking to create a website and so I was doing a name search and I found your blog. My name is also David Aldrich. Small world! I was reading your post. I know you wrote it a while back but I thought I'd leave a response anyway.

Just wondering... have you asked yourself if this analogy is correct as you relate it to the existence or nonexistence of God? I mean, I agree that children are brought up believing much of what their parents have taught them until a time comes in their lives when they begin to question and reason for themselves.

But what if Plato's story just doesn't work here? What if God is real? Maybe science doesn't disprove God but supports his existence? I've often thought that it takes more faith to be an atheist than it does to believe that God exists.

    Just some food for thought.

    Peace.

    Another Dave Aldrich

  • I hope you are ready to explain yourself when you have to stand in front of god after you die. You little story mentions nothing about faith and the freedom of choice that we are given.

Oh yee of little faith, bow down, accept god and Jesus. Discover the freedom and peace of acceptance of your savior and lord. Live by his tenants. Know Jesus and know peace, no Jesus and no peace.

My god bless you to open your heart to his forgiveness.

    Bill

  • Hey Dave,

I’d be happy to sit down with you anytime and further discuss why I believe in God. It has nothing to do with my parents confining me to a cage. It has to do with historical facts and personal experience. It is far easier for people to discredit God than to respect him and follow through with his simple and minor requests of us in this world. It is far easier to deny him in the same way we deny responsibility to our fellow man on this earth. God has laid out his plan for every person in this world, and it our will to follow it or follow our own path.

Scientist have proven over and over the factual credibility to more aspects of the Bible than they have disproved. I think the hardest thing for people to accept is that God created the Heavens and the Earth, and the time frame in which he created it. Yet to me, it is far easier to accept this fact than any big bang theory and/or that humans were once apes. Regarding time, Bible says Gods time is not man’s time. And there is no reference in the Bible as to how long one of God’s days is to one of man’s days. So, many people read or hear this passage and say, “No way, all false, God could not have created all of this in 7-days.” The Bible tells us to have faith in the Bible and in God’s word.

Now, I realize that humans, especially men, have difficulty placing all our eggs in one basket merely by faith, we need to see, touch, smell and/or here God to believe in God. Well, many of us have never taken the time to do this. We live in our time not God’s. What if you spent a quiet morning talking to God, no distractions, no radio, no TV, no computer no whatever? How about a quiet morning sitting a top Marshal Peak, watch the beautiful sun rise from behind the mountain, the birds flying past, the small animals running about, in that peaceful time, surrounded with what God has created not what man has created, with no distractions, you simply talk to God and quietly listen for his response. God does talk to us if we listen. But most of us are to busy to listen, and neither are our heart or mind in the right place (prepared) to listen. I have heard God speak to me on several occasions. Not as often as I wish, but it is in God’s time when he speaks not in mine.

I know God exists because scientists have proven more facts in the Bible than disproved. I know God exists because of how complex every life form on this planet is, something that no big bang and/or evolution could not have ever accomplished. The big bang and evolution are more theory by scientist than proven facts. The Bible is a proven historical record of our past. But most of all, I know God exists because I have seen him through the miraculous changes in peoples lives once they begin to follow God and I have heard him as he has spoke directly to me in my quiet time of prayer and worship.

It is far easier to discredit God so as not to be accountable or be required to live by faith alone, than it is to be held accountable as one who believes in God. Yes, believers of Christ have more to be accountable for when we get to heaven than non-believers. Non-believers will just not have a heaven to go to.

    God Bless

  • Yo Dave,
Looking at this blog b/c I loved your write up on the camera boom! I'll have to figure out my own and will use lots of the ideas there! Thanks. Racy subject here! I've always been interested in why people believe in certain religions, like Christianity in the US for e.g, or why some people go the agnostic or atheist route. I think your scenario about growing up with a certain faith "expected of people" is powerful, just like when someone launches, someone else is MUCH more likely to lemming off into the air b/c other people are doing it. However, I think there's a solid majority of people that grew up enough to make their own choices regardless of what they're told to do. Evident by how many children pick mates that are polar opposites of their parents wishes... Similar sort of.. Personally, After lots of internal dialogue, volunteering at church camps, and study just before college, I concluded that it would be safe to "believe" in God. I wasn't going for specifics really, just faith or no faith. Probably like you/me and a BUNCH of HG dude's I pal around with, I'm strongly repulsed by anything I'm told to do, expected to do, and extra sensitive to any situation 'contrived' to bring me to some intended result... Which takes me out of the "faithful by default" scenario you theorized (mostly).
I would agree with an .org post that religion discussions aren't too healthy for msg boards, but it'd be fascinating to see where HG guys stand. I think there's a higher than average amount of atheists in the HG/PG arena and am always paying attention to it for some reason. The HG community is high on the analytical side from my experience. I was a MECH Eng major at CU Boulder just b/c it could help me figure out how everything worked, or at least grease the wheels for future understanding. It's been strange how my faith has been challenged along the way. Even with HG. I used to think that a breeze blowing in my face at just the right time was probably influenced by a higher power... now I understand it's about lapse rates and heating and time of day yadda yadda... but I still think that faith and science can be symbiotic. The laws of physics, the theory of evolution, Momentum=Mass*Velocity and higher knowledge in general don't negate faith the way I see it, just sometimes challenge some 'interpretations' of stories. Like someone else commented, Gods time can pretty easily be wider than our human time? I've been thinking of getting my more personal thoughts out on my blog too. Although I'm not sure I have the balls to go there yet.... Thanks for listening. :)
    Later,
    BJ (aka QuienesSuPa)
